Kings XI Punjab produced a gutsy performance with bat and ball to snatch close win by 7 runs against Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League played at Wankhede Stadium. Mumbai fell short of chasing a mammoth 231 runs posted Kings XI courtesy of a superb innings played by Wriddhiman Saha. Kieron Pollard fought valiantly till the end and produced a half-century went in vain as Punjab held onto their nerves to keep their hopes alive for qualifying for the playoffs.
Lendl Simmons and Parthiv Patel started off the things with a bang as Mumbai Indians piled on the runs at a good rate. Ishant came into the attack in the fifth over of the innings but was smashed for three fours in an over. Simmons continued the aggression as he smoked two sixes against Mohit Sharma to see Mumbai comfortably placed at 68 for 0.
Glenn Maxwell decided to bring himself into the attack as he conceded five runs with his off spin. Parthiv Patel was dismissed by Mohit Sharma to see Mumbai lose their first wicket. Simmons follow Patel back to the pavilion as Maxwell got the wicket courtesy of a splendid catch by Martin Guptill. Mumbai Indians lose wickets in quick succession as Rohit Sharma and Nitish Rana fell for low scores.
Kieron Pollard came to the crease with Hardik Pandya to form a partnership and take the game till the end. Matt Henry was ripped apart by the duo in the 16th over. Pandya fell for 30 runs as he smashed four sixes in an innings. Mumbai fell short of the target as Sandeep Sharma and Mohit Sharma bowled well in the last overs to see Kings XI win the game.
Earlier in the game, Wriddhiman Saha produced a blistering innings of 93 runs as Martin Guptill and Glenn Maxwell chipped in with good contributions to see Punjab amass 231 runs off 20 overs.
