Visitors are on a 12-match losing streak going into first game of three-match series on Sunday
New look Sri Lanka will be looking to breathe easy and break their long losing streak when they will face Kohli-less India in the first of three-ODI series in Dharamsala on Sunday. The match will be the first one for new captain – all-rounder Thisara Perera, who replaces Upul Tharanga on permanent basis as the leader of the pack.
The Islanders are currently on a 12-match losing streak, which included two five-nil whitewash against India and Pakistan. There were some controversy in the Sri Lanka team selection as the selectors opted to drop Test captain Dinesh Chandimal, and there also were reports that the Sports Minister was not happy about it.
In Chandimal’s absence, the team will be depending on the likes of veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews and ex-captain Tharanga in the batting department to provide stability before the likes Perera can unleash themselves on the India’s bowling attack.
In the bowling department, the visiting side will be banking on the likes of pacers Suranga Lakmal and Nuwan Pradeep, whereas in the spin department, the onus will be on young Akila Dananjaya to provide the goods.
On the other hand, team India are looking to experiment as much as they can ahead of a tough tour in South Africa.
In the absence of Kohli, who is being rested for the ODI series, the team will be depending on stand-in captain Rohit Sharma and his partner Shikhar Dhawan to provide solid start at the top, whereas in the middle order, Ajinkya Rahane will be the key in making sure there will be no collapse of the home side.
In the bowling department, the eyes will be once again on young leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who will be looking to continue his good form after series of brilliant performances in the ODI series against Australia and New Zealand in the recent past.
The pitch looks good for batting, and can also provide some assistance to the pacers, whereas the weather is expected to stay fine throughout the game.
