South Africa came out on top with a consolatory win over defending Champions Srilanka at Feroz Shah Kotla.Delhi in the last game of Group 1 in the ICC T20 World Cup 2016.
Srilanka campaign ended on a disappointing note as they could not achieve victory against top sides in the Group 1 of the Super 10 stage of the tournament.South Africa did pull in a good performance in a low key fixture by first containing Srilanka to score below par score of 121 runs and then comfortably chasing it down to win the game by 8 wickets.
South Africa came up with right plans in this game by having two spin options in the line up in the form of leg spinner Imran Tahir and left arm spinner Aaron Phangiso. The spin duo provided the ultimate stranglehold on the Lankan Tigers who after a breezy start stumbled in the innings to reach below par score on the surface which was much better than Nagpur one used in the tournament.Farhan Behardien also came into the side in place of Rilee Rossouw and proved nice option with the ball taking two wickets.
Srilanka openers started well in their innings but game was eventually turned when both got out after making good starts. The innings after that showed glimpses of Srilanka’s travails in stumbling their way towards a score with regular flurry of wickets. The Srilanka’s middle order has been woeful in the tournament with Angelo Mathews being only one player to perform in all the games.Srilanka at the beginning were 45 runs for loss of no wickets with both openers still at the crease, the innings slumped to 96 for 7 in a space of ten overs showing inability to capitalize on a good start.
South Africa openers came out to bat and started well.Hashim Amla remained unbeaten on 56 runs while Faf du Plessis and AB De Villiers also chipped in with vital runs to take the team over the line against Srilanka by 8 wickets.
