Pakistan’s experienced batsman Shoaib Malik rose to the occasion to help the side clinch the three-match one day series by a margin of 2-1. The series decider was played at the same venue i.e. Providence Stadium in Guyana. The visitors move one step closer for qualifying for 2019 Cricket World Cup in England.
Shannon Gabriel did make early inroads into Pakistan’s top order in the chase but it proved insufficient as Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez played well to see visitors seal the one day series. West Indies batted first as Jason Holder opted to bat first after winning the toss. Shai Hope and Jason Mohammad batted with grit and determination against disciplined bowling performance produced by Pakistan. Pakistan started the proceedings in the chase in a jittery fashion as Ahmed Shehzad and Kamran Akmal perished for single-digit scores while Babar Azam scored 16 runs before dragging the ball onto the stumps to see Gabriel claim his second wicket of the game.
Hafeez played well as he notched up his half century off 58 balls and hit six boundaries in the proces Malik took his time at the crease as the duo put on a stand of 113 runs to put Pakistan in a box seat to win the game. Hafeez was dismissed for 81 runs by off-spinner Ashley Nurse to see Pakistan lose their fourth wicket with 149 runs on the board after 30 overs. Malik continued to rotate the strike and score boundaries off loose deliveries as he added 87 runs with Captain Sarfaraz Ahmed to see Pakistan win the game by six wickets.
Malik reached three figures in one day internationals for a ninth time in his illustrious career for Pakistan Cricket. He scored unbeaten 101 runs off 111 balls and struck ten boundaries in his innings.
West Indies will aim for a better show in the Test series that will begin from 22nd April against Pakistan.
