Rohit Sharma and Lokesh Rahul smashed centuries to help India register a comfortable win over Sri Lanka in the 44th game of ICC Cricket World Cup played at Leeds.
The day started with the Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne winning the toss and opting to bat first. His decision proved to be disastrous one as the side lost the first four wickets with just 55 runs on the board.
But a 124-run partnership between veteran all-rounder Angelo Matthews and middle-order batsman Lahiru Thiramanne led the fightback for Sri Lanka. Once Lahiru Thiramanne, Dhananjaya provided ideal support to Matthews to help Sri Lanka post 264 for 7 in 50 overs.
Angelo Matthews finished the innings with the top score of 113 off 128 with the help of 10 fours and 2 sixes, whereas Thiramanne made valuable contribution of 53 off 68 with the help of four boundaries. All-rounder Dhananjaya de Silva also chipped in with crucial innings and scored 29 not out off 36 balls.
For India, Pacer Jaspreet Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers as he claimed three, whereas fast-bowler Hardik Pandya and left-arm spinner Ravendra Jadeja claimed one wicket each.
Chasing 265 was never going to be a difficult task for the star-studded Indian batting lineup, who never looked in any sort of trouble and comfortably got over the line in the 44th over with seven wickets in hand.
The star of the show was once again Rohit Sharma, who produced a splendid innings for the team and scored 103 runs off 94 balls with the help of 14 fours and two sixes.
He was well supported by his opening partner Lokesh Rahul, who scored 111 off 118 balls with the help of 11 fours and a six. Indian Captain remained unbeaten till the end and scored 34 not out with the help of three boundaries.
For South Africa, left-arm medium pacer Isuru Udana was the only successful bowler on the night as he finished with figures of 1 for 50 in 9.3 overs.
