Pakistan is scheduled to tour England to play three Test and three-match T20I series in the month of August and September. The visitors have arrived well before time in order to adjust to the English conditions. There was been intra-squad warm-up game played at Derby. Pakistan Test Captain Azhar Ali will be hoping that the side can produce a decent show in the three-match Test series.
For Pakistan, the main agenda will be post competitive scores against England. There is no doubt that Babar Azam is the premier batsman for Pakistan in red-ball cricket.
Despite his initial struggles in Test cricket, he quickly found his way and starting scoring big runs for Pakistan. Since Jan 2018, Babar Azam has accumulated 1375 runs in 15 Test matches at an average of 65.47. He has notched up five centuries and nine half-centuries during this period.
Besides Azam, the side will be relying on the experienced duo of Asad Shafiq and Azhar Ali to deliver the bulk of the runs. Since Jan 2018, Asad Shafiq has produced decent scores for the side and is averaging 37.65 with the bat.
Captain Azhar Ali will need to improve his numbers as he has gone through a lean run with the bat. In 16 Test matches, Azhar has scored 790 runs at an average of 27.24 with two centuries and four half-centuries to his name.
Opener Shan Masood will be looking to make amends for his poor record against England. Since his return to the Test side, Masood has been able to produce decent numbers for the side at the top of the innings. In eight matches, Masood has accumulated 624 runs at an average of 44.57 with two centuries and three half-centuries to his name.
Rookie opener Abid Ali will be keen to make an impression with the bat on his first visit to UK. In three matches played for Pakistan, Abid has scored 321 runs at an average of 107.00.
In the bowling department, the side will be relying on the likes of Mohammad Abbas, Yasir Shah and Shaheen Shah Afridi. Since Jan 2018, Mohammad Abbas has delivered excellent performances with the new-ball. In 13 Test matches played so far, Abbas has claimed 52 wickets at an average of 20.50. He has picked three five-wicket hauls and one ten-wicket haul.
Rookie pacer Naseem Shah will certainly be a surprise package for Pakistan in this three-match Test series.
The team management have included players like Sohail Khan, Faheem Ashraf and Imam-ul-Haq, who have experience of playing in English conditions. Mohammad Rizwan, Rohail Nazir and Sarfaraz Ahmed will be three wicket-keeping options for the side for this Test series.
Yasir Shah is certainly Pakistan’s premier spinner in red-ball cricket, while Imad Wasim has been named in the T20I squad. Uncapped batsman Haider Ali has been included in both the Test and T20I squad.
It will be interesting how Pakistan go in this three-match Test series against England.
