Batsman’s quick-fire 56 help Chennai register a five-wicket win on Tuesday
Sam Billings produced a master blaster to help Chennai Super Kings in registering their second win of the 11th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with a five-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders in Chennai on Tuesday. The day started with home side’s captain Mahendra Singh (MS) Dhoni winning the toss and opting to field first.
His decision backfired completely as the visitors posted a mammoth total of 202-6 in their allotted 20 overs. The star of the show for Dinesh Karthik’s men was West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell, who scored a breathtaking 88 not out off just 36 balls with the help of one four and 11 maximums and finished with an astonishing strike-rate of 244.44.
For Chennai, all-rounder Shane Watson was the pick of the bowlers as he claimed two, whereas Shardul Thakur and Harbhajan Singh claimed a wicket each.
In reply, the hosts had a stunning beginning courtesy 75-run opening partnership between Watson and Ambati Rayudu inside the first six overs. But once Watson departed, Chennai lost their way and were reduced to 101 for three in the ninth over.
However, from there on, it was truly a Billings show and he pretty much single-handedly took Chennai home. The England international scored 56 off just 23 balls with the help of two fours and five sixes. He was well supported by skipper Dhoni, who played a cautious knock and scored 25 off 28 balls with the help of one four and one six.
For Kolkata, England fast-bowler Tom Curran was the most successful bowler on the night, as he claimed two wickets but gave away 39 runs in three overs. In a match where more than 400 runs were scored in 40 overs, Kolkata off-spinner Sunil Narine gave just 17 runs and claimed a wicket in his four overs. For his outstanding batting performance, Billings was named the player of the match.
