Root, Archer set up comfortable win for England

Joe Root produced unbeaten century to see England cruise to a comfortable win over West Indies in 19th game of ICC Cricket World Cup played at The Rose Bowl, Southampton. England bowlers put in a scintillating performance to dismiss West Indies for 212 runs. In reply, Joe Root led the way with the bat to see England notch up their third win of the competition.

Nicholas Pooran, who scored a crucial half-century to see West Indies reach a respectable score against England. Shimron Hetmyer and Chris Gayle failed to capitalize on their good starts and managed to score quick-fire 30s.Pace bowler Jofra Archer was the standout bowler for West Indies with three wickets to his name.

Chasing 213 runs to win, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow got the side off to an excellent start and added 95 runs in space of 14 overs. Bairstow produced a brisk innings but once again fell short of a half-century. He scored 45 off 46 balls with the help of seven boundaries.

Left-arm quick Sheldon Cottrell produced a probing spell for the West Indies but could not pick up wickets with the new-ball. Shannon Gabriel came into the attack and dismissed Bairstow to see West Indies lose their first wicket. All-rounder Chris Woakes was promoted to no.4 in the batting order and provided adequate support to Joe Root. The duo added 104 runs to see England placed in a great position to win the game.

Joe Root smashed second ton of the World Cup to see England register a comprehensive win over West Indies in a game played at The Rose Bowl in Southampton.

For England, Joe Root was the standout performer with the bat and scored unbeaten 100 runs off 94 balls with the help of 11 boundaries. He remained unbeaten till end to see England complete the chase in 34th over of the innings.

Earlier in the day, Chris Woakes bowled a searing yorker to get rid of Evin Lewis for a duck. Mark Wood trapped Shai Hope right in front of stumps to see West Indies lose three wickets with 54 runs on the board. Chris Gayle scored 36 off 41 balls with the help of five boundaries.

Nicholas Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer added 89 runs to keep West Indies scoreboard ticking in the innings. Pooran scored 63 off 78 balls with the help of three fours, while Hetmyer scored 39 off 48 balls with the help of four fours.

The tail-order did not offer much resistance as West Indies were bundled out for a below-par score.

For England, Mark Wood and Jofra Archer bowled well and picked up six wickets between them. Part-time spinner Joe Root also picked up wickets of Jason Holder and Shimron Hetymer in the innings.
