Opening batsman Rohit Sharma and pacer Jasprit Bumrah produced outstanding performances to guide India to a six-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the third ODI of the five-match series in Kandy on Sunday.
Sri Lankan team went in the match without regular captain Upul Tharanga, who received two-match ban for slow over rate in the second ODI.Stand-in skipper Chamara Kapugedera won the toss and opted to bat first in the do-or-die encounter, but his decision backfired as hosts lost two wickets inside the first eight overs.
However, 72-run third-wicket partnership between Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne revived hopes for the Islanders, but all-rounder Hardik Pandya broke the stand in 26th over.From then on, hosts kept losing wickets at the regular interval, and managed to score 217 for the loss of nine wickets in their allotted 50 overs.
Bumrah produced a sublime performance with the ball and picked up his maiden five-wicket haul to finish the innings with the figures of 5-27 in 10 overs.For Sri Lanka, Thiramanne finished the innings with the top score of 80 off 105 balls with the help of five boundaries and one six.
Chasing 211 to seal the series, visitors had an awful start as they lost opener Shikhar Dhawan and captain Virat Kohli at the score of 19 inside the first six overs.
A 42-run partnership between opener Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul eased the nerves for the visitors, but off-spinner Akila Dhananjaya picked up two wickets in quick succession to put Sri Lanka on top.
From there on,Sharma and wicket keeper batsman MS Dhoni put on a 157-run unbeaten partnership to seal the series with 29 balls to spare.
Rohit Sharma finished the innings with the top score of 124 not out off 145 with the help of 16 fours and two sixes, whereas Dhoni finished unbeaten on 67 off 86 with the help of four boundaries and one six.
Bumrah for his outstanding bowling performance was awarded man of the match.
