The fourth game of the one day series between Srilanka and Australia was played at Dambulla. The Aussies had a lead of 2-1 going into the game and it showed as they put up yet another top notch effort to clinch the series.
Australia’s opening pair of Aaron Finch and David Warner provided a quick-fire at the start to chase the target of 213 runs set by Srilanka. The frailties of Australian batsmen against spin have been noted on the tour as captain Angelo Mathews brought Amila Aponso into the attack after the first over of the innings. Aaron Finch immediately went on the charge against bowlers to place Australia in good position in the game.Sachith Pathirana dismissed Warner for 19 but Finch blazed at a rate of knots to produce 55 runs off 19 balls that included eight fours and three sixes. Pathirana bowled well and took the wicket of Finch to reduce Australia 74 for 2 after 5 overs. Usman Khuwaja went for a duck as he was trapped right in front to give Pathirana his third wicket of the game.
George Bailey came to the crease and played an unbeaten innings of 90 runs off 85 balls to take Australia to win the game by 6 wickets. He stabilized the innings and put 100 run partnership with Travis Head to literally put Australia in the box seat in the game. Head also played well for his 40 runs off 60 balls but was dismissed by off spinner Dilruwan Perera in the 28th over of the innings. Bailey compiled his 21st half century in one day internationals to clinch the series for Australia at Dambulla as they now lead by 3-1 with final game to be played at Pallekele in Kandy.
The game was setup by Australian bowling as medium pacer John Hastings took six wickets in the game to restrict Srilanka to 213 runs after 50 overs. Dhananjaya de Silva top scored with 76 runs followed by Angelo Mathews who scored 40 runs in the game after Srilanka won the toss and elected to bat first on a decent deck produced at Dambulla.
