Asghar Afghan-led unit register 136-run win on Thursday
Rashid Khan’s brilliant all-round display was enough to help Afghanistan in registering a thumping 136-run win against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup 2018 in Abu Dhabi on Thursday. The day started with Afghanistan captain Asghar Afghan winning the toss and opting to bat first in good batting conditions.
At one stage, it looked like the team will be bowled out for under 200 after losing seven wickets for just 160 runs in the 41st over.
But an unbeaten seven-wicket partnership of 95 runs off just 53 balls between Rashid and Gulbadin Naib helped the team in reaching to a more than competitive total of 255-7 in their allotted 50 overs.
Rashid remained not out on 57 off 32 balls with the help of eight fours and one six, whereas Naib scored unbeaten 42 off 38 balls with the help of five fours. Middle-order batsman Hashmatullah Shahidi finished the innings with the top score of 58 off 92 balls with the help of three fours. For Bangladesh, left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan was the pick of the bowlers as he claimed figures of four for 42 in his 10 overs.
In reply, Bangladesh never looked like chasing the target against a formidable bowling lineup of Afghanistan and were bowled out for just 119 in the 43rd over. Veteran all-rounder Shakib finished the innings for Bangladesh with the top score of 32 off 55 balls, whereas Mahmudullah and Mosaddek Hossain scored 27 and 26 runs respectively.
For the winning side, Rashid was the star of the show once again as he claimed figures of two for 13 in nine overs and was also involved in the run out. He was well-supported by young leg-spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Naib, who claimed two wickets each. It will be interesting to see how Afghanistan do in the Super-4 stage of the Asia Cup. Asghar Afghan and co. have surprised many crickets due to their clinical victories over Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
Afghanistan will play their first game of Super 4 stage against Pakistan while Bangladesh will take on India on Friday.
