Raina’s splendid knock helps Gujarat Lions notch up a crucial win over Kolkata Knight Riders

Suresh Raina led from the front to help Gujarat Lions seal a much-needed win against Kolkata Knight Riders in a game played at Eden Gardens played in Kolkata. He scored 84 runs off 46 balls and held the innings together for Gujarat after home side scored 187 runs on the board courtesy of splendid effort by Robin Uthappa who top scored with 72 runs.

The chase was never easy but Aaron Finch blazed away in the initial overs of the innings to provide great impetus to the innings. Gujarat Lions raced to 42 runs in just 3.3 overs. Finch scored quick-fire 31 runs while McCullum also was not far with his 33 runs off 17 balls to see Gujarat placed at 73 runs in just 6 overs. Dinesh Karthik was dismissed for a low score while Ishan Kishan could not make any impression.

Skipper Suresh Raina kept on playing his strokes as he continued to be attacking against opposition bowlers. He formed 58 run partnership with Ravendra Jadeja to see the side take one step close to a win. He smashed four sixes in his innings while James Faulkner and Ravendra Jadeja were till the end to see the side notch up a famous win.

Earlier, Raina elected to field first after winning the toss as Praveen Kumar came in for Shivil Kaushik and James Faulkner for Andrew Tye. While Kolkata saw Shakib Al Hasan slotted into the side replacing Colin de Grandhomme. Sunil Narine was destructive in his stroke play as he scored 42 runs off 17 balls to provide Kolkata an ideal start. Though Narine departed but Robin Uthappa and Gautam Gambhir kept the scoring rate to a desirable one as they added 69 runs for second wicket. Gambhir fell trying to go for big shots to help side reach 190 run mark as Uthappa smashed 72 runs off 48 balls. He struck eight fours and two sixes in his innings to see Knight Riders rake 187 runs off 20 overs.

Gujarat Lions will be happy with their performance against Kolkata while the home side will fell a number of decisions on the field cost them the game in the Indian Premier League.
