Rahane, Bumrah star as India thrash West Indies

Ajinkya Rahane’s superlative batting performance followed by Jaspreet Bumrah brilliant bowling display helped India register a comprehensive 318-run win against West Indies in the first Test of series played in Antigua

The game started with West Indies Skipper Jason Holder winning the toss and opting to bowl first on a lively surface. The quick bowlers proved Holder’s decision correct as they managed to dismiss India for 297 runs in 96.4 overs.

The star of the show for the visitors was middle-order batsman Ajinkya Rahane, who finished the innings with the top score of 81 off 163 balls with the help of ten boundaries. He put on a crucial partnership with Hanuma Vihari to bail the side out of the trouble. Rahane was well supported by Vihari, who chipped in with gritty innings of 32 runs off 56 balls.

Ravendra Jadeja proved his worth as a batsman for India in this innings. He scored a crucial half-century to see India post a decent total in their first innings.

For the home side, Pace bowler Kemar Roach was the star of the show as he claimed figures of four for 66, whereas Shannon Gabriel claimed three wickets.

In reply, West Indies also struggled to get going in their innings. But a partnership between Jason Holder and Shimron Hetymer helped West Indies post 222 runs in their first innings. Roston Chase and Shai Hope also chipped in with vital runs.

Middle-order-batsman Roston Chase finished the innings with the top score of 48 off 74 balls with the help of five boundaries. He was well supported by middle-order batsman Shai Hope and Shimron Hetymer, who scored 24, 35 off 65 and 47 balls respectively.

For India, pacer bowler Ishant Sharma was the star of the show as he claimed figures of five for 43. He was well-supported by pacer Mohammad Shami, who claimed two wickets.

In the second innings, India batted much better and put in an improved batting performance to declare at 343 for 7 in 112.3 overs. For India, Ajinkya Rahane was the standout player in this innings and scored his tenth century in Test cricket. He scored 102 runs off 242 balls with the help of five boundaries. He was well supported by Indian Captain Virat Kohli and Hanuma Vihari, who scored 51 and 93 respectively.

For West Indies, part-time spinner Roston Chase was the best bowler on show as he claimed four, whereas Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel claimed one wicket each.

Chasing a mammoth score of 418 runs to win the first Test, Jaspreet Bumrah ran through the top-order with a spectacular new-ball spell. Ishant Sharma also picked up wickets to see West Indies reeling at 37 for 7 after 15.2 overs. Kemar Roach and Miguel Cummins played some short but it wasn’t enough as West Indies were bundled out for 100 runs in 26.5 overs. With this result, India have taken 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series.

For India, Pace bowler Jaspreet Bumrah produced an exceptional bowling performance with the new-ball and finished with figures of 5 for 7 in eight overs. Ishant Sharma and Mohammad Shami also produced tidy spells and picked up five wickets between them to see India register an emphatic win at Antigua.
