Mohammad Sami produced last over heroics with the ball to help Islamabad United defeat Quetta Gladiators by a just one run. In an enthralling finish, Quetta only needed five runs of the last over of the innings with plenty of wickets in hand. Sami delivered a top-notch performance under extreme pressure as Rilee Rossouw failed to get the bat on the willow in the last few balls.
The victory was much-needed won for Islamabad Untied as they have secured their spot in the playoffs of the Pakistan Super League 2017.Quetta Gladiators will rue the fact that they had the game in the bag but complacency brought about their downfall as the side slumped to a shocking defeat. Sarfaraz Ahmed will be disappointed by this performance as the Gladiators dominated the game till the last over.
Chasing a score of 166 runs to win, Gladiators produced a good start as Ahmed Shehzad and Kevin Pietersen put on a 133 run stand to see the side perfectly placed to win the game. But credit must be given to Misbah-ul-Haq and co as they fought till the end and made Gladiators work hard for their runs. The result was timely reminder for all the teams in the competition that nothing can be taken lightly in a format like T20 cricket.
Kevin Pietersen looked in sublime touch as he top-scored for the side with 68 runs off 42 balls. He struck six fours and three sixes in his innings. Shehzad also continued his rich vein of form with another half century and scored 59 runs off 51 balls. Rumman Raees, Mohammad Irfan and Mohammad Sami were excellent with the ball in hand to setup an improbable win for Islamabad United.
Earlier in the game, Quetta Gladiators won the toss and opted to field first. Islamabad United once again produced a collective effort with the bat as Hussain Talat led the way with the bat with splendid innings of 56 runs playing his first game for the side. Misbah-ul-Haq, Shane Watson and Brad Haddin also chipped with useful 20s to see the post 166 runs from 20 overs. Zulfiqar Babar with his left arm spin was the pick of the bowlers for Gladiators.
Islamabad United with his close win has now joined Quetta Gladiators as the second team to secure their berth in the last four of the competition.
