Guyana Amazon Warriors brought their A-game to the table to upstage defending Champions Jamaica Tallawahs in the Eliminator played at Trinidad. Rashid Khan claimed a hat-trick in the game to restrict Tallawahs to 168 runs off 20 overs.
Kumar Sangakkara led the way with the bat as left-hander scored 57 runs off 38 balls to post a competitive score on the board. However, Luke Ronchi came out all guns-blazing as his innings completely took the game away from reigning champions to see Guyana win the game by five wickets.
Sangakkara innings helped Tallawahs get a decent total as the defending champions were in a spot of bother at 116 for 7 after 14.3 overs. Chadwick Walton once again got Warriors off to a breezy start as he smashed the first ball of the innings for a big six.
Walton continued to be aggressive against the bowlers despite Sohail Tanvir’s continuous failures at the top of the innings. He added 67 runs off six over with New Zealand’s Luke Ronchi to see Guyana in a great position to chase down the target posted by Jamaica. The dew prevalent at the ground did not help Jamaica’s cause as bowlers found it tough to grip the ball. Mahmudullah got rid of Walton in the 9th over to keep Jamaica in the game.
Ronchi played a belligerent innings for his side. He scored unbeaten 70 runs off 33 balls. He was eventually dismissed by Mohammad Sami who trapped him right in front in the 16th over. Assad Fudadin played a nice innings to steer his to a win the game in 17th over.
Guyana Captain Rayad Emrit won the toss and opted to bowl first because of the dew factor having an impact in the second half of the game. Sohail Tanvir and Veerasammy Permaul bowled poorly upfront to see Lendl Simmons and Kennar Lewis put 40 runs for the opening wicket. Emrit brought himself into the attack as the ploy worked as he dismissed Lewis for 15 runs.
Steven Jacobs also got into the act to get rid of Simmons who scored 34 runs off 25 balls. He claimed his second wicket to dismiss Mahmudullah and turn the game in favor of Guyana with Jamaica precariously placed at 59 for 3 after 6.5 overs. Trevor Griffith coming at no.3 scored 20 runs and added 39 runs with Captain Kumar Sangakkara to rebuild the innings.
Rashid Khan’s triple strike saw Jonathan Foo, Andre McCarthy and Rovman Powell perish for low scores in the 14th over of the innings. Kumar Sangakkara looked determined despite all the troubles as he scored unbeaten half century to help his side add another 52 runs in the last five overs of the innings.
Luke Ronchi was adjudged man of the match for his brilliant innings as Guyana will face Trinbago in the Qualifier 2 game of the Caribbean Premier League on Thursday.
