Lasith Malinga produced an inspirational bowling performance to see Sri Lanka eke out a narrow win over England in the 27th game of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 at Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds on Friday. Veteran pacer dismissed the likes of Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root and Jos Buttler to see England get bundled out for 212 runs.
Angelo Matthews came to the party with the bat for Sri Lanka and produced unbeaten 85 runs to see Sri Lanka post a modest total on the board. Tournament favorites England have not been at their best on the pitches that offered an event contest between bat and ball.
Chasing a score of 233 runs, Lasith Malinga made early breakthroughs with the ball to get rid of Jonny Bairstow and James Vince in the initial overs. England Captain Eoin Morgan also looked off-color with the bat but managed to add 47 runs with Joe Root to keep the scoreboard ticking for the side.
Morgan failed to create his batting heroics from the previous game and offered a simple catch to Isuru Udana to see England lose their third wicket with 73 runs on the board.
Root continued his good form with the bat and scored yet another half-century to momentarily provide hope to England. Lasith Malinga came into the attack and dismissed Root to see England lose their fourth wicket.
All-rounder Ben Stokes produced a valiant innings for the side and fought hard till the end. He found no support as wickets continued to tumble at the other end. Stokes finished unbeaten on 82 runs off 89 balls with the help of 7 fours and 4 sixes.
Mark Wood was the last man out as Nuwan Pradeep picked up the final wicket to see Sri Lanka seal a famous win over England.
Lasith Malinga brilliant four wickets and Angelo Matthew’s composed unbeaten 85 runs saw Sri Lanka to a 20-run World Cup win over England.
Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka got off to worse possible as Kusal Perera and Dimuth Karunaratne dismissed for low scores.
Avishka Fernando played an aggressive innings and decided to take on the likes of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood in a bid to make a comeback in the game. He scored a fiery knock of 49 off 39 balls with the help of 6 fours and 2 sixes. He was supported by Kusal Mendis, who chipped in with 46 off 68 balls.
All-rounder Angelo Matthews played a crucial innings for the side and anchored the whole the innings with an unbeaten 85 runs off 115 balls with the help of 5 fours and a six. Dhananjaya also chipped in with much-needed cameo to see Sri Lanka post 232 for 9 after 50 overs.
For England, Mark Wood and Jofra Archer bowled exceedingly well and picked up six wickets between them. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid put in an improved performance and finished with figures of 2 for 45 from his full quota of overs.
