The first T20 game of the series saw India complete a comprehensive win over Ireland played at Malahide Cricket Club, Dublin. Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan played well to see India post over 200 runs while batting first. James Shannon was the only batsman who put up a fight for Ireland. Left-arm Chinaman Kuldeep Yadav was most successful bowler with four wickets to his name.
In pursuit of 209 runs, Paul Stirling perished early in the innings as pacer Jaspreet Bumrah provided early breakthrough for India. Andrew Balbirnie came to the crease and added 41 runs with James Shannon to rebuild the innings. Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal struck immediately as he dismissed Balbirnie, stumped by MS Dhoni while trying to go for a big shot. Opener James Shannon played well for Ireland while others perished for low scores.
Left-arm Chinaman Kuldeep Yadav also kept things tight as Ireland batsmen failed to read the spinners. Chahal picked up wickets of Captain Gary Wilson and Kevin O’Brien to see Ireland tottering at 96 for 6 after 12.3 overs. Ireland could only manage 132 for 9 from 20 overs to see India win the game by 76 runs.
For India, Yadav and Chahal picked up seven wickets and ran through Irish middle order. Jaspreet Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar also produced immaculate spells to see India put in a clinical performance with the ball.
Earlier in the day, Openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan got India off to a great start. The pair put on 160-run partnership in space of 15 overs. Sharma scored 97 off 61 balls with the help of eight fours and five sixes. Left-hander Dhawan also chipped with 74 off 45 balls with the help of five sixes. India will be pleased as top-order came good with the ball in this game.
For Ireland, pacer Peter Chase was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets. For his superb bowling performance, Kuldeep Yadav was named man of the match.
