The forty-seventh game in the ninth edition of the Indian Premier League saw battle of mid-card teams as Mumbai Indians take on Delhi Daredevils at ADC-VDCA stadium in Visakhapatnam.
Zaheer Khan leading Delhi Daredevils side won the toss and elected to field first.Shahbaz Nadeem did get some turn in the early overs but that was end of it as Krunal Pandya produced an exceptional performance as he struck thirteen boundaries and scored 86 runs off 37 balls. He was swift in his footwork against the spinners. He produced his career best innings as a batsman to propel his side Mumbai Indians to get over 200 runs from 20 overs. Rohit Sharma was aggressive from the outset as he looked to use his feet against the slow bowlers. Martin Guptill did struggle initially and did stay at the wicket to craft a good innings of 48 runs off 42 balls.
Delhi Daredevils did possess world class spinners in their armory with likes of Amit Mishra and Imran Tahir but the spin duo could not deter Krunal Pandya, who went on to play one of the finest innings of his career as heaved across the line to the spinners. He along with Guptill added 98 runs to lay an ideal foundation for other batsmen to come in the lineup.
Imran Tahir came on in 13th over that prove to be costly as Guptill and Pandya took the attack to the spinner and took 23 runs off the over to increase rate of scoring. Chris Morris did bowl cleverly at the death overs as he went on to dismiss Kieron Pollard and Krunal Pandya in the 18th over. The second last over went for 16 runs which meant Imran Tahir finished with 59 runs from his four overs to record the worst figures by a spinner in the Indian Premier League. Mumbai went to score 206 runs to put a stiff chase for Delhi Daredevils.
Daredevils never looked to be in the game from the start as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Quinton de Kock was the only batsman to put some kind of score on the board with his 40 runs off 28 balls. Once he was dismissed, the chances of Delhi Daredevils winning also evaporated as Mumbai seal a comprehensive win by 80 runs.
Mumbai Indian bowling was good as Jaspreet Bumrah was the pick of bowlers with three wickets that allowed his team to register their seventh victory to go one step closer to qualify for the playoffs in the Indian Premier League.
