Islamabad United suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Karachi Kings in the eliminator played in Pakistan Super League played at Sharjah. Rumman Raees bowled well for United to restrict Kings to a below par score of 126 runs but his efforts went in vain as Kings bowled splendidly well to dismiss reigning champions for just 82 runs to secure a 44-run win out of nowhere in the playoff game.
Islamabad United got off to a bad start as left arm seamer Muhammad Amir took two wickets upfront to provide Kings with hope to win the game. Asif Ali played well for his 39 runs and went on the attack against bowlers. The game turning point was left arm spinner Imad Wasim coming into the attack and dismissing Misbah-ul-Haq and Shane Watson in quick succession.To make matters worse all-rounder Shadab Khan played a reckless stroke to see United slump to 70 for 6 after 13 overs. Usama Mir picked up the lower order wickets with relatively ease to pull off a big upset over defending champions Islamabad United to go through to face Peshawar Zalmi in Qualifier 2 game of the Pakistan Super League 2017.
Earlier, Islamabad United won the toss and decided to bowl first. Mohammad Sami bowled consecutive maiden overs at the start of the innings to strangle Kings for a free runs. Chris Gayle, Kumar Sangakarra and Babar Azam all reached double figures in the innings and could not continue to get a big score for Karachi. The regular flurry of wickets meant that Kings never got any chance to impose themselves on the game as they were restricted to around 126 runs from 20 overs. Rumman Raees was exceptional at the death while Mohammad Sami was top-notch as usual to see Karachi struggle to score any runs in the last five overs of the innings.
Karachi Kings will face Peshawar Zalmi in the playoffs of the Pakistan Super League and the winner of the game will play Quetta in the finale at Lahore for the coveted prize.
