Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin produced another outstanding bowling performance as India beat Sri Lanka by an innings and 171 runs in the third Test in Kandy on Monday.
The victory, which was the biggest for the visitors in the series, also completed a dominant whitewash and further highlights downfall of Sri Lankan cricket. The match had once again a similar pattern to the previous two games, where India captain Virat Kohli won the toss and opted to bat first.
The South Asian giants posted a formidable total of 487, courtesy centuries from opener Shikhar Dhawan (119) and all-rounder Hardik Pandya (108).Pandya’s innings was the highlight of the innings, as the 23-year-old smashed eight fours and seven maximums in his stay of 96 balls.
For hosts, slow left-arm chinaman Lakshan Sandakan was the pick of the bowlers, as he claimed five wickets, whereas all-rounder Malinda Pushpakumara picked three and pacer Vishwa Fernando picked two wickets.
Once again fighting for the survival in the match, hosts were blown away from visitor’s slow left-arm chinaman Kuldeep Yadav and were bowled out for just 135. The 22-year-old claimed four wickets and just gave away 40 runs. He was well supported by Ashwin and pacer Mohammad Shami, who picked two wickets each.
Captain Dinesh Chandimal finished the innings with the score of 48 off 87, which included six boundaries. Kohli for the second time in the series enforced follow on, and his decision paid instant dividend as the visitors could not manage to put any fight and were bundled out for just 185. Ashwin produced another blistering performance as he claimed four wickets and just gave away 32 runs, whereas Shami well supported him with three wickets.
Pandya for his outstanding batting performance was awarded man of the match, whereas Dhawan was awarded man of the series.
Both teams will now compete in the five-match ODI series, which will start from August 20.
