India register comfortable nine-wicket win in 2018 Asia Cup
Shikar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma scored outstanding centuries as India registered a thumping nine-wicket win against Pakistan in the Super-Four tie in the 2018 Asia Cup in Dubai on Sunday. The day started with Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed winning the toss and opting to bat first for the second time against arch-rivals in the space of five days.
But his decision backfired as the Men in Green had another poor beginning in the big tie and lost three wickets with just 58 runs in the 16th over. A 107-run partnership between skipper Sarfraz and veteran all-rounder Shoaib Malik stabilized the innings and at one stage, the team looked set for a target in excess of 260. But once Sarfraz departed, the Men in Blue made a grand comeback and restricted the opposition to 237 for seven.
Malik played another outstanding knock for the Green Caps and finished the innings with the top score of 78 off 90 balls with the help of four boundaries and two maximums. He was well-supported by captain Sarfraz and Asif Ali, who scored 44 and 30 off 66 and 21 balls respectively.
For India, right-arm pacer Jasprit Bumrah was the star of the show as he claimed figures of two for 29 in his 10 overs. He was well supported by Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav, who claimed two wickets each and gave away 46 and 41 runs respectively.
In reply, team India never looked in trouble and chase down the target with 63 balls and nine wickets in spare, courtesy breathtaking 210-run opening partnership between Dhawan and Sharma. Dhawan completed his 15th century in ODIs and finished with 114 off just 100 balls, whereas Sharma scored his 19th century in the 50-over format and remained unbeaten on 111 off 119 balls. Pakistan fielder also played their part in helping team India as they dropped three catches of Sharma, whereas no bowler managed to claim a wicket for the team.
