The thirty-sixth game in the ninth edition of the Indian Premier League saw Delhi Daredevils take on the team at the bottom of standings,Kings XI Punjab at IS Bindra Cricket Stadium,Mohali.
The game turned out to be a roller coaster ride but Daredevils shall rue the fact 54 runs were needed off the last six overs with 8 wickets remaining should have been yet another comfortable win for the side.It was not to be as Kings XI Punjab pace trio in shape of Sandeep Sharma,Mohit Sharma and Marcus Stoinis bowled splendidly at the death overs to take their side to a nine run victory over their formidable opponents.
Delhi Daredevils big hitters like Chris Morris and Carlos Brathwaite could not get anything going as they were contained by a blend of slow leg cutters,short balls and excellent yorkers.The performance was so special given the amount of dew in the outfield in the second half as Kings XI Punjab managed to defend 181 runs put up their batsmen.
Quinton de Kock start off the proceedings in the chase by scoring 52 runs off 30 balls.The game turned when Stoinis dismissed de Kock as he chopped a slow delivery to point.Karun Nair and Sanju Samson played well as Delhi Daredevils in pole position as they were placed at 121 for 2 after 13 overs.The game turned when old ball gripped and did something for Marcus Stoinis who got rid of Sanju Samson who scored 49 runs and Karun Nair also got dismissed by leg spinner KC Cariappa.Carlos Brathwaite did manage to hit some hefty bowls before falling to a short ball trap set by pacer Sandeep Sharma.
Earlier in the day, Kings XI were put in to bat first as Zaheer Khan won the toss for Delhi Daredevils and decided to field on the surface prepared at Mohali.Murali Vijay and Marcus Stoinis provided an excellent start with 40 runs on the board after 5 overs.Hashim Amla also failed to make an impression in his first game of the Indian Premier League.Marcus Stoinis played well for his 52 runs scored off 44 balls while Wriddhiman Saha also played crucial innings under pressure to scored 52 runs off 33 balls.
The late hitting at the end by Glenn Maxwell,David Miller and Axar Patel allowed Kings XI to post 181 runs after 20 overs.The win gives Kings XI their third victory of the season while Delhi Daredevils suffered their second consecutive defeat in the Indian Premier League 2016.
