Gujarat Lions came up short against a spirited Kings XI Punjab in the 26th game of the Indian Premier League played at Rajkot. Dinesh Karthik produced a valiant effort with the bat but Gujarat still lost the game by 26 runs. The hosts did manage to restrict Kings XI to 189 runs off 20 overs courtesy of splendid effort by Hashim Amla who top-scored with 65 runs off 40 balls. Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell and Axar Patel also chipped in with 30s to help Punjab put up a daunting total on the board.
After conceding this defeat, Gujarat find themselves at the last place with only two wins out of seven games played in the tenth edition of Indian Premier League. Brendon McCullum perished early in the chase while Aaron Finch failed to go big as well. Suresh Raina kept the scoreboard and picked up regular boundaries to help Gujarat build momentum to their innings. Gujarat Skipper was dismissed at critical juncture to see the side placed at 70 for 3 after 8.6 overs.
Dinesh Karthik was burdened due to string of low scores in the last few games but middle-order found hard for Gujarat to produce a defiant innings of 58 runs. Axar Patel and KC Cariappa produced tidy spells to take four wickets between them to keep Gujarat at bay in the middle overs of the innings.
