Gujarat Lions defeat Rising Pune Supergiants by 3 wickets despite Steve Smith’s maiden ton.

The twenty-fifth game in the ninth edition of the Indian Premier League saw team at the top of table,Gujarat Lions take on mid-card players, Rising Pune Supergiants at Maharashtra Cricket Stadium,Pune.

The match went down to the wire as Gujarat Lions almost lost the game from a winning position due to reckless running between the wickets and poor shots played by their batsmen.Steven Smith scored a sublime century earlier in the day only to be overshadowed in the chase by adventurous endeavor exhibited with the bat by Dwayne Smith.James Faulkner was at the crease to see his side Gujarat Lions to victory by three wickets to confirm their first place in the Indian Premier League 2016.

Steve Smith came to the crease and bedazzled the opposition with his beautiful placement in terms of finding gaps at all times to notch up his first t20 century that could easily have ended up as a match winning effort on any other day.But Gujarat Lions openers came out with aggressive intent as Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum shared opening stand of 93 runs off 8 overs.The brisk start provided by the openers allowed Dinesh Karthik and Suresh Raina to just keep the scoreboard ticking along nicely at the given required run-rate.Dinesh Karthik was caught by Ajinkya Rahane at deep mid wicket as Gujarat Lions needed 30 runs off 4 overs.Dwayne Bravo and Ravendra Jadeja went in a clutter to put pressure on Gujarat Lions as the game went down to the last over where Faulkner delivered the knockout blow by hitting the winning runs over Rising Pune Supergiants.

Earlier in the day,Suresh Raina leading Gujarat Lions decided to win the toss and elected to field first.The innings for Rising Pune Supergiants was all about Steve Smith who made 101 off 54 balls and shared 111 run partnership with opener Ajinka Rahane who also made 53 runs off 45 balls.The end overs the score accelerated as MS Dhoni played a nice cameo to remain unbeaten at 30 off 18 balls to propel his side to score 195 runs after 20 overs.

The win puts Gujarat Lions in a comfortable first position in the lndian Premier League standings while Rising Pune Supergiants are placed in the last four having suffered their fifth loss in the competition.
