Gujarat Lions clinch a thrilling win by one run against Delhi Daredevils despite late heroics by Chris Morris

Chris Morris played an audacious knock at the end but came out on the losing side as Gujarat Lions managed to sneak out a victory by one run. The match was played between the two sides at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, Delhi in the ninth edition of the Indian Premier League.

Zaheer Khan won the toss and decided to bowl first in order to chase down the runs posted by Gujarat Lions. The openers for Gujarat Lions Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith got off to a rollicking start picking boundaries at regular intervals. The opening duo shared the fastest fifty partnership off 23 runs in the ninth edition of the Indian Premier League. The game was moving nicely for Gujarat Lions did score over 110 runs after 10 overs.Delhi Daredevils did stage a comeback once they dismissed Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith once Imran Tahir came onto the attack to strike early for his side. Imran Tahir also picked up the wickets of debutant Ishan Kishan and Dinesh Karthik to see Delhi Daredevils struggle to get more runs in the last ten overs. Spinners Amit Mishra and Imran Tahir bowled admirably in the last ten overs to restrict Gujarat lions to 172 runs after 20 overs.

Gujarat Lions bowlers were right on the money as Quinton de Kock and Sanju Samson were dismissed early to leave Delhi Daredevils placed at 12 for 2.Dhawal Kulkarni was main star of the game as he picked up the top order wickets to put his side Gujarat Lions in a position of ascendancy.

JP Duminy came to the crease alongside with debutante Rishabh Pant. He scored 48 runs off 43 balls and kept the scoreboard ticking along nicely. JP Duminy was joined by Chris Morris to take the team till the end. Ravendra Jadeja was expensive in his first over as Duminy went after him to start the counter attack for Delhi Daredevils. Chris Morris went after the Gujarat Lions bowlers as he struck his maiden half century off just 17 balls that included six sixes. The last three overs saw Dwayne Bravo dismiss Duminy to turn the tide for his side. Praveen Kumar bowled cleverly to keep Delhi Daredevils out led by an outrageous innings played by Chris Morris who remained unbeaten at the end for his 82 disappointed not to take his side to victory.

The win puts Gujarat Lions at the top of table in the Indian Premier League 2016 with Kolkata Knight Riders at second place who will play their game against Mumbai Indians tomorrow.
