He could not get a big score as he was undone by delivery from leg spinner Adam Zampa to be holed out by fielder George Bailey at short mid-wicket. Zampa also provided vital breakthrough as he trapped Angelo Mathews leg before wicket for 2 runs to see hosts 4 down for a score of 103 on the board. Dinesh Chandimal yet again produced metronomic consistency with the bat to notch up splendid fourth hundred in one day internationals while others departed for low scores in the innings. He scored 102 runs off 130 balls and anchored the whole innings to see the side get 226 runs after 49 overs. Australian leg spinner Adam Zampa was star with the bat grabbing figures of 3 for 38 in his ten overs.
Australia in reply lost their captain David Warner and Shaun Marsh early in the innings to see them precariously placed at 2 for 42 after 8 overs. Finch scored freely for his 30 runs and struck three fours in his innings before being trapped leg before wicket by left arm orthodox spinner Amila Aponso. The man of the moment for Aussies turned out to be George Bailey who did produce a gutsy innings against potent Srilankan spinners under lights to guide his team to a crucial win. Bailey put another 81 runs with wicketkeeper Wade to see Australia within a touching distance of securing a win in the third one day. George Bailey top scored for Australia with 70 runs off 99 balls.He struck five fours in his innings and played superbly according to the situation. Travis Head and Mathew Wade also chipped in with vital contributions.
The end was tricky for the visitors as they lost three wickets for 18 runs but Zampa at the end delivered the winning runs to see his side home in the 46th over. Australia now leads the series 2-1 in five match series. Srilanka would be disappointed as they could give Tillakaratne Dilshan a befitting farewell in his last one day game at Dambulla.
