The first game of the knockout stage in the Caribbean Premier League saw St Kitts and Nevis Patriots compete against Trinbago Knight Riders in the Qualifier 1 played at Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad. The game was contest between two captains in Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo who wanted to produce their best in order to claim a place in finals of the competition.
Patriots eventually came out on top in a game as they outplayed Trinbago in all three departments to secure their place in the finals of the competition. Knight Riders, who finished top in the round-robin stages, will have another chance to make to the finals as they face between the winner of the Eliminator game played between Guyana and Jamaica.
Trinbago got off to a bad start as Sunil Narine was run-out in the first over of the innings. William Perkins also went back as Hilfenhaus dismissed for 1 to see Trinbago reduced to 2 for 2 after 1.1 overs. Left-arm pacer Sheldon Cottrell rose to the occasion as he first dismissed danger man Colin Munro for 5 to put Patriots on top in the game.
The situation demanded the likes of Darren Bravo and Dinesh Ramdin to rebuild the innings and then go for the chase. The duo momentarily provided a glimmer of hope as they added 36 runs in the next set of five overs. Carlos Brathwaite came into the attack and dismissed Ramdin to see Trinbago lose their fourth wicket in the game. Mohammad Hafeez with his off-spin dried up the runs with pinpoint accuracy. Bravo perished after a terrible mix-up with Daniel Christian.
Hafeez dismissed Christian leg before wicket to see Trinbago in deep trouble and on the verge of losing the game. Once Bravo and Christian departed, it was just a matter of time Patriots wrapped up the win. Cottrell came back for his second spell and picked up Dwayne Bravo and Javon Searles to see Trinbago get bundled out for 111 runs in 19.3 overs.
Earlier, fiery opener Evin Lewis departed for just 7 runs but Gayle played a measured innings to see the side post a good score in their innings. Mohammad Hafeez chipped in with 21 runs as he put on 42 runs with Gayle to rebuild the innings. Brandon King also played a crucial knock as he added 48 runs with Gayle to keep the scoreboard ticking along nicely. Trinbago bowled well at the end of the innings as Gayle scored unbeaten 54 runs off 51 balls to see Patriots post 149 runs off 20 overs. Dwayne Bravo was the pick of the bowlers for Trinbago as he bagged four wickets in the game.
Gayle was named man of the match for his composed knock in this game as Patriots have reached the finals of Caribbean Premier League.
