Excellent performances from Shaheen Afridi, Chris Lynn and Fakhar Zaman was enough to see Lahore Qalandars register five-wicket win over Peshawar Zalmi in the 24th game of 2020 Pakistan Super League at Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday. With this result, Lahore Qalandars managed to register their fourth win of the season.
The day started with Sohail Akhtar winning the toss for Lahore Qalandars and opting to bowl first. The decision proved to be a correct one as Samit Patel and Shaheen Afridi made crucial breakthroughs to reduce Zalmi to 24 for 3 after 3.2 overs.
Experienced Shoaib Malik and Haider Ali put on a 116-run partnership for the fourth wicket to lead the fightback for Peshawar Zalmi. Shoaib Malik once again showed excellent form with the bat and notched up his third half-century for Peshawar this season.
Rookie batsman Haider Ali played exceedingly well and scored 69 runs off 43 balls with the help of four boundaries and three sixes. He was well supported by Malik, who chipped in with 62 runs off 43 balls with the help of seven boundaries and two sixes.
Carlos Brathwaite’s late blitz proved to be helpful in Peshawar Zalmi post 187 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their 20 overs.
For Lahore Qalandars, left-arm quick Shaheen Shah Afridi was the standout bowler on display and finished with 3 for 28 in 4 overs. Left-arm spinner Samit Patel also bowled well and claimed two wickets, whereas Dilbar Hussain and David Wiese picked one wicket each.
Chasing 188 runs for victory, openers Sohail Akhtar and Fakhar Zaman got the side off to a steady start and added 50-run partnership.
Skipper Sohail Akhtar could not capitalize on his good start and scored 21 runs off 19 balls. His opening partner, Fakhar Zaman, continued to play positive cricket and kept the scoreboard ticking for Lahore Qalandars.
Zaman formed a 96-run partnership with Chris Lynn to Lahore Qalandars in the box seat to win the game. Chris Lynn found form with the bat and notched up his first 50 plus score this season. He scored 59 runs off 32 balls with the help of six boundaries and three sixes.
Pugnacious opener Fakhar Zaman was the standout batsman with the bat and finished the innings with the top-score of 63 runs off 46 balls with the help of four boundaries and three sixes.
Samit Patel and David Wiese put on a useful partnership to steer Lahore Qalandars to a comfortable victory over Peshawar Zalmi.
For Peshawar Zalmi, medium-pacer Carlos Brathwaite claimed three wickets, whereas Wahab Riaz finished with 1 for 27 in four overs.
For his splendid half-century for Lahore Qalandars, opener Fakhar Zaman was named player of the match.
