All-rounder Fahim Ashraf created history and Shadab Khan produced heroics with the bat as Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by two wickets in the second T20I of the three-match series in Abu Dhabi on Friday.
The day started with home sides’ captain Sarfaraz Ahmed winning the toss and opting to bowl first. Sri Lanka, this time, had a solid start and at one stage, were looking to set target in excess of 150 as they reached to 106 for the loss of only one wicket in the 16th over.
However, a major collapse, where Islanders lost eight wickets for just 13 runs saw them finished with the score of just 124 for the loss of nine wickets in their allotted 20 overs.
In the 19th over of the innings, all-rounder Ashraf created history by becoming the first Pakistani player to register hat-trick in T20I cricket as he claimed wickets of Udana, Udawatte and Shanaka on consecutive deliveries.
For Sri Lanka, opener Gunathilaka finished the innings with the top score of 51 off 48 with the help of four fours and one six. Chasing just 125 to clinch the series, the Men in Green had a flying start and were well on course till the fifth over.
A real mix up cost Fakhar Zaman his wicket which started collapse for the hosts, as they lost four wickets for just 24 runs. Veteran all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez and captain Sarfraz steadied the ship with 39-run fifth-wicket partnership, but once again flurry of wickets left Pakistan with 12 to get off the final over.
With eight needing off the last three balls, Shadab then hit one out of the park to help his team get over the line with a ball to spare. Final match of the series will be played on Sunday in Lahore.
