Faf du Plessis hits career-best 185 as South Africa beat Sri Lanka in a close game

The fourth game of the one day series between hosts South Africa and Sri Lanka was played at Newlands; Cape Town.Sri Lanka came good with the bat on this tour as Tharanga notched up a splendid ton to see the side in the hunt to win the game against South Africa.

The hosts were given a scare as Upul Tharanga and Niroshan Dickwella provided the side with quick-fire start at the top of the order as duo added 130 runs in space of 16 overs. The efforts of the openers kept Sri Lanka well on track to get close to the target posted by South Africa. Dickwella departed after scoring another fifty in successive games but Tharanga continued to play his strokes to race to 73 ball ton as Kusal Mendis was played well at the other end. Tharanga added 64 runs to see the visitors placed in a commanding position at 203 for 1 after 27 overs. The fortunes changed hands as South Africa got back into the game with left arm pacer Wayne Parnell dismissing Mendis and Tharanga in a space of three overs.

Sandun Weerakkody played a sensible innings under pressure to add 75 runs with Asela Gunaratne and take the game as close as possible till the final over. The partnership was looking dangerous as Rabada came into the attack to take care of the Gunaratne as the last five wickets fell for another 20 runs to see the side got bundled out for 328 runs in the 48th over of the innings.

Earlier in the day, South Africa won the toss and opted to bat first on placid pitch prepared for the game. Hashim Amla fell early in the innings but Faf du Plessis came to the crease and put on 100 stand with Quinton de Kock to lay down an ideal platform for a big total on the board.du Plessis showed masterclass with bat as he is in the form of his life to produce his career best of 185 runs off 141 balls to help South Africa put up a total of 368 runs after 50 over.du Plessis struck six fours and three sixes as he smashed Sri Lankan bowlers to all corners of the ground..

Faf du Plessis was named man of the match for his scintillating performance with the bat as South Africa go 4-0 up in the series. The final game will be played at Centurion against Sri Lanka on 10th February.
