England go through to the semis despite defiance shown by Angelo Mathews

Srilanka came so close to winning the game against England due to a superb knock played their Skipper Angelo Mathews. The Srilankan all-rounder remained unbeaten till the end for his 73 runs as England won the match by 10 runs.Earlier in the day,Srilankan Captain Angelo Mathews won the toss and chose to field first at Feroz Shah Kotla pitch in Delhi.

England did put a competitive total on the board with 171 runs in their innings largely due to brilliant knock played their premier finisher Jos Butler who struck 66 runs off 37 balls.Jason Roy and Joe Root also contributed with some runs at the start while Alex Hales was dismissed with making any impression on scoring sheet on the day.

Srilanka were in tatters in reply losing their top four batsmen with just 15 runs on the board.England bowlers Chris Jordan and David Willey bowled well in their opening spells to put Srilanka on the back foot from the start. However, the end for Srilanka was not scripted there as Angelo Mathews conspired a comeback alongside Chamara Kapugedara to recover the innings and provide stability to the run-chase.

Angelo Mathews played remarkably well under pressure while Chamara Kapugedara battled sensibly at the other end to keep the scoreboard ticking along.Srilanka’s innings gathered momentum when England leg spinner Adil Rashid conceded  21 runs in the 12th over to reviving their chances of winning the game. The progress was put to an end when Chamara Kapugedara was dismissed for 30 runs in the 13th over of the game.Thisara Perera came to the crease and could not get going as he was dismissed by Chris Jordan in the 17th over.Dasun Shanaka provided some hitting momentarily to be caught by Joe Root off the bowling of left arm medium pacer David Willey.

The lack of the support for Angelo Mathews meant that he was stranded till the end to see his side bow out of the WorldT20 2016 while England rejoiced their win and are through to the semifinals of the tournament,
