Dwayne Smith’s blitz helps Gujarat Lions sink Kings XI Punjab

Dwayne Smith produced a magnificent innings to help Gujarat Lions overcome Kings XI Punjab in the 47th game played at Mohali in the VIVO IPL 2017. Hashim Amla scored another magical ton for Punjab but his efforts could not help his side win the game as bowlers failed to defend a target of 190 runs off 20 overs. Gujarat finished the game off in the last over of the innings to notch up their fourth victory of the season.

Gujarat made a perfect start to the chase as Openers Ishan Kishan and Dwayne Smith put on 91 runs for the first wicket to lay down an ideal platform for others play their natural game. Kings XI fielding was poor as they missed a couple of chances to let Gujarat off the hook. Smith scored 74 runs off 39 balls for Gujarat Lions. He smashed eight boundaries and four sixes in his innings to make sure Lions kept piling on the runs at good rate. Kishan also played well for his 29 runs before T Natarajan dismissed him to see Lions lose their first wicket with 91 runs after 9.2 overs.

Raina smashed two boundaries off Varun Aaron to find his timing in the innings. Smith got dismissed in 11th over trying to go for a maximum against off-spinner Glenn Maxwell. Raina was joined by Karthik as they added 42 runs to keep Lions well on the track to the chase down the target. Karthik remained unbeaten on 35 runs to help Gujarat Lions pull off an amazing win by six wickets and keep their chances of qualifying alive in the competition.

Earlier in the game, Suresh Raina won the toss and opted to bowl first. Martin Guptill fell for just 2 runs to see Pradeep Sangwan take the first wicket of the innings. It was all Hashim Amla after that as South African played a sublime innings to produce his second ton of this season and added 125 runs with Shaun Marsh to see the side register 190 runs on the board. Amla eventually fell for 104 runs as South African masterclass batsman smashed eight fours and five sixes in his innings. Marsh also chipped in with vital 58 runs but in the end score proved to be not enough as fielding left Punjab down big time in this game.
