Dowrich stars as West Indies thrash Sri Lanka in first Test

Shane Dowrich’s stunning knock in the first innings paved the way for West Indies in registering a thumping 226-run win against Sri Lanka in the first Test of three-match series in Port of Spain.The match started with the home side winning the toss and opting to bat first in brilliant batting conditions.

The decision proved a correct one as after a poor start, the Caribbean giants managed to score a mammoth first innings total of 414 for the loss of eight wickets before declaring it late on second day. The star of the show was wicketkeeper-batsman Dowrich, who scored his career’s first century in the five-day format and remained unbeaten on 125 off 325 balls with the help of 12 boundaries.

For Sri Lanka, young pacer Lahiru Kumara was the pick of the bowlers as he claimed figures of four for 95 in 31 overs. In reply, the Islanders first innings was a complete disaster as they were bowled out for just 185 in 55.4 overs, courtesy sublime bowling performance from West Indies pacers.

Right-arm Miguel Cummins was the pick of the bowlers for the home team as he claimed figures of three for 39, whereas Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel claimed two wickets each.

In the second innings, West Indies put another decent show before declaring at the score of 223 for the loss of seven wickets, setting Sri Lanka a target of 453 to go 1-0 up in the series.Left-handed batsman Kieron Powell was the top performer for the home side with 88 off 127 balls with the help of seven fours and two sixes.For the visitors, Kumara was once again the best bowler on show as he claimed figures of three for 40 in nine overs.

Chasing 453 was never going to be easy for a young Sri Lankan batting lineup and so it proved to be as they were bowled out for just 226. Opener Kusal Mendis finished the innings with the top score of 102 off 210 balls with the help of 10 fours and two sixes.

For West Indies, off-spinner Roston Chase was the star of the show as he claimed four, whereas leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo claimed three wickets.For his outstanding batting performance, Dowrich was named player of the match.
