Delhi Capitals managed to pull off comfortable win against Kings XI Punjab, courtesy splendid half-centuries from Captain Shreyas Iyer and Shikhar Dhawan.
In the 37th game of Indian Premier League, Capitals produced splendid bowling performances to restrict Kings XI Punjab star-studded batting lineup to just 163 runs. In reply, Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer scored crucial runs to see Delhi complete the chase in the final over of the innings.
With this result, Delhi Capitals retained their third position in the league table and managed to second win of the season at Feroz Shah Kotla.
Chasing 164 runs to win, Rookie opener Prithvi Shaw failed to produce a notable score and perished in the 4th over of the innings. Mandeep Singh produced a splendid effort in the field to Shaw way short of his ground.
Despite losing early wicket, Shikhar Dhawan looked in excellent form and smashed boundaries at regular intervals to keep the scoreboard ticking in the innings. Rookie Harpreet Brar conceded 17 runs from his first over to see Dhawan up the ante for Delhi Capitals. Dhawan was well supported by Skipper Shreyas Iyer as the duo added 92 runs to put Delhi in a strong position to win the game.
Shikhar Dhawan brought his 35th half century in the Indian Premier League and also became the first batsman to smash 500 boundaries in the history of Indian Premier League. He scored 56 off 41 balls with the help of seven fours and a six.
Skipper Shreyas Iyer remained unbeaten till the end and helped Delhi Capitals win the game by five wickets. He scored unbeaten 58 runs off 49 balls with the help of five fours and a six.
Pace bowler Hardus Viljeon came into the attack and dismissed him in the 14th over to see Delhi lose their second wicket with 116 runs on the board. Wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant departed for a low score after playing a reckless shot to see Viljeon claim his second wicket of the innings.
Colin Ingram came to the crease and smashed a quick-fire 19 runs off 9 balls to help Delhi move an inch closer towards victory.
Earlier in the day, Delhi Capitals won the toss and opted to bowl first. Chris Gayle delivered a splendid effort with the bat. He scored 69 off 37 balls to help Kings XI post a decent score on the board.
Lokesh Rahul, Mayank Agarwal and David Miller failed to make an impact on a sluggish surface prepared at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi. Leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane was slotted into the playing XI for this game. He certainly delivered with the ball and picked up key wickets of Rahul and Gayle in the innings.
Mandeep Singh, Ravichandran Ashwin and Harpreet Brar chipped in with crucial cameos to see Kings XI Punjab post 163 for 7 in 20 overs.
For Delhi, Sandeep Lamichhane was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets to his name. Kagiso Rabada also delivered a spectacular performance and picked up two wickets in the game.
