Deepak Chahar, spinners shines as Chennai Super Kings thrash Kolkata Knight Riders

In the battle of heavyweights in the Indian Premier League, Chennai Super Kings produced a pitch perfect display with ball to beat Kolkata Knight Riders by seven wickets.

On a tricky surface, Chennai opted to bowl first and restricted Kolkata to 108 for 9, courtesy of splendid bowling performances from Deepak Chahar, Harbhajan Singh and Imran Tahir. In reply, Faf du Plessis delivered another good performance with the bat to see Chennai

Deepak Chahar and Harbhajan Singh picked up five wickets between to restrict Kolkata to a paltry score of 108 runs in 20 overs. Medium-pacer Deepak Chahar made early inroads with the new-ball to see Chennai take control of the game.

Chasing 109 runs to win, Shane Watson started the innings in a brisk manner. He scored 17 runs off 9 balls with the help of two fours and a six. He perished in the third over of the innings while trying to go for a big shot off the bowling of Sunil Narine.

Suresh Raina also failed to capitalize on his good start and was dismissed by Narine to see Chennai lose their second wicket. Faf du Plessis continued his good form in this game and added 46-run partnership with Ambati Rayudu to see Chennai take a step closer towards victory.

Rayudu scored 21 off 31 ball with the help of two boundaries. The spin trio of Kuldeep Yadav, Sunil Narine and Piyush Chawla bowled well and did not Chennai to score freely. Du Plessis remained till the end to see Chennai win the game in the 18th over of the innings. He scored 43 off 45 balls with the help of three boundaries.

Deepak Chahar, Harbhajan Singh and Imran Tahir produced splendid bowling performances to help Chennai beat Kolkata in a game played on Tuesday.

For Kolkata, Sunil Narine and Piyush Chawla bowled well and picked up three wickets between them. The pace duo of Prasidh Krishna and Harry Gurney failed to pick up wickets for Kolkata.

Earlier in the day, Kolkata got off to a poor start as Deepak Chahar dismissed Chris Lynn and Nitish Rana in a quick succession. The pitch certainly played its part as Lynn was trapped right in front as the ball kept low off the bowling of Chahar. Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh got rid of Sunil Narine to see Kolkata in a spot of bother.

Robin Uthappa came to the crease and smashed two boundaries of the bowling of Chahar in an effort to rebuild the innings. Chahar claimed his third wicket after he dismissed Uthappa with a short-pitch delivery.

Captain Dinesh Karthik scored 19 off 21 balls with the help of three boundaries. He also failed to capitalize on his good start as he chipped a full-delivery to mid-wicket off the bowling of Imran Tahir.

Shubham Gill played a reckless shot to see Tahir pick up his second wicket of the innings. Andre Russell came to the crease with Kolkata reeling at 47 for 6 after 10.1 overs. All-rounder continued his good form with the bat and looked comfortable against the quick bowlers.

Kolkata managed to cross 100-run mark, courtesy splendid half-century from Russell. He scored 50 off 44 balls with the help of five fours and three sixes.
