Sunrisers Hyderabad sealed their place in playoffs of 2017 Indian Premier League after comfortably brushing aside Gujarat Lions in the 53th game played at Green Park Stadium, Kanpur. David Warner led the way for Sunrisers with the bat to score unbeaten 69 runs off 52 balls. He was ably supported by Vijay Shankar as they added unbeaten 133-run stand to take the side to victory in the 18th over of the innings.
Sunrisers lost two wickets early in the chase as Praveen Kumar dismissed Shikhar Dhawan and Moises Henriques. The reigning champions Hyderabad were placed in a precarious situation at 25 for 2 after 3 overs when Warner was joined by Shankar at the crease. Shankar had a slice of luck early in his innings and was dropped by Dinesh Karthik when batting on 6 runs. The pair of Warner and Shankar stabilized the innings and played sensibly to pile on the runs in the chase.
Warner notched up his 37th half century of Indian Premier League career while Shankar was not far behind going on produce his maiden half-century off 35 balls.
Earlier in the game, Ishan Kishan and Dwayne Smith got Gujarat Lions off to a brilliant start as opening duo scored 111 runs off 10 overs. But the players scored half-centuries but once they departed Gujarat’s batting lineup imploded to be dismissed for a modest total of 154 runs. Muhammad Siraj grabbed four wickets in the game while Rashid Khan dismissed Aaron Finch and Dinesh Karthik to end up taking three wickets for Sunrisers.
