Clinical Delhi Capitals claims top-spot with a comfortable win over Punjab Kings

Pacer Kagiso Rabada, openers Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw put in excellent performances to help Delhi Capitals register a comfortable win over Punjab Kings in the 29th match of 2021 Indian Premier League at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The day started with Delhi Capitals won the toss and opted to bowl first on a pitch that looked a decent one.

The decision proved to be a correct one as bowlers delivered a disciplined performance to restrict Punjab Kings to a modest score of 166 runs for the loss of six wickets in their full quota of overs.

Pacer Kagiso Rabada managed to break their lean run with the ball in hand. The 25-year old was the pick of the bowlers and claimed three wickets in his four overs. Besides Rabada, spinner Axar Patel and pacer Avesh Khan bowled well and claimed one wicket apiece.

For Punjab Kings, opener Mayank Agarwal was the standout player with the bat and finished the innings with unbeaten 99 off 58 balls with the help of eight fours and four sixes. He was well supported by Dawid Malan, who chipped in with 26 runs off 26 balls with the help of one four.

Chasing 167 runs for victory, openers Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw once again got the side off to a flying start. The in-form duo added 63 runs in 6.1 overs before Shaw was cleaned up by left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar.

For Delhi Capitals, Shikhar Dhawan was the standout performer with the bat against Punjab Kings. Left-hander stitched crucial partnerships with Prithvi Shaw, Steven Smith and Rishabh Pant to help Delhi dominate the proceedings in the run-chase.

He played exceedingly well and finished the innings with the top-score of 69 not out off 47 balls with the help of six fours and two sixes. He was well supported by likes of Prithvi Shaw and Steven Smith, who chipped in with scores of 39 and 24 respectively.

Captain and wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant and Shimron Hetmyer also added crucial runs to see Delhi Capitals complete target with 14 balls to spare.

For Punjab Kings, Left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar, Chris Jordan and Riley Meredith claimed one wicket apiece.

For his excellent 99 runs in a losing cause, Mayank Agarwal was named player of the match. With this result, Delhi Capitals have reclaimed top spot in the IPL and have 12 points to their name.
