Rangpur Riders overcame the odds to beat reigning champions Dhaka Dynamites in the finals of Bangladesh Premier League 2017-18. Mashrafe Mortaza led Riders to their maiden league title as they managed to defeat Dynamites by a comfortable margin. Dhaka captain Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and opted to field first.
Dynamites started well as they reduced Riders to 20 for 1 after 5 overs. Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum played sensibly to withstand the pressure created by Dhaka’s bowling lineup. The duo certainly up the ante in the last six overs as Riders turned the tables to score 206 in their full quota of overs. Dhaka had no answer to the Chris Gayle’s onslaught who smashed sixes all over the park to score 146 runs.
Gayle scorching ton coupled with McCullum half-century saw Riders post an imposing total on the board in the grand finale. The 38-year old Jamaican went to break his own record of the highest individual score in the T20 competition. Gayle also completed 11,000 runs in the 20-over format which is quite a remarkable achievement.
Things do not Dhaka’s way as they lost Evin Lewis early in their innings. Kieron Pollard also played a reckless shot to leave the defending champions in all sorts of trouble. did not much with the bat.
Chris Gayle’s splendid ton helped Rangpur Riders clinch their maiden trophy. The Jamaican was named man of the tournament with 485 runs with two centuries to his name.
