Chennai Super Kings maintained their winning streak by registering a comfortable win over Kolkata Knight Riders in the game played at Eden Gardens.
Chennai won the toss and restricted Kolkata to a modest score, courtesy splendid bowling performances from Imran Tahir and Shardul Thakur. In reply, Suresh Raina chipped in with crucial half-century to help Chennai register a comfortable win and extend their lead at the top of league table.
Chasing 162 runs to win, Shane Watson’s poor form continued as Harry Gurney trapped right in front to see Chennai lose their first wicket. On the other hand, Faf du Plessis smashed four consecutive boundaries off the bowling of Andre Russell to keep the scoreboard ticking in the chase. Sunil Narine came into the attack and immediately dismissed du Plessis, who was cleaned up while trying to play a sweep shot. Du Plessis scored 24 off 16 balls with the help of five boundaries.
Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla joined the party and dismissed Ambati Rayudu for a low score. Kedhar Jadhav worked hard for his runs and added 20 runs with Suresh Raina in bid to rebuild the innings. He was trapped right in front in the 12th over as Piyush Chawla claimed his second wicket of the innings.
MS Dhoni came to the crease and formed a 40-run partnership with Suresh Raina to put Chennai in a good position to win the game. Dhoni smashed a six off the bowling of Kuldeep Yadav to put pressure back on Kolkata. Sunil Narine dismissed Dhoni for 16 runs in the 16th over with Chennai needing 41 runs off 26 balls.
Suresh Raina played a crucial innings under the circumstances and chipped in with a half-century to take the game down to the wire. He notched up his half-century in just 36 balls. He was well supported by Ravendra Jadeja, who also played a crucial cameo.

Ravendra Jadeja smashed three consecutive fours off the bowling of Harry Gurney in an over to see Chennai needing just 8 runs to win the match. Jadeja and Raina certainly completed the chase in the final over to see Chennai maintain their top spot in the league table.
Earlier in the game, Chris Lynn started his innings with positive intent and decided to go after the Chennai bowlers. He added 38 runs with Sunil Narine to set the tone for the innings. Deepak Chahar conceded a lot of runs in his initial overs, while his new-ball partner Shardul Thakur fared better in his opening spell.
Sunil Narine perished for a low score as left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner to see Chennai lose their first wicket. Lynn joined hands with Nitish Rana and added 42 runs to provide impetus to the innings. Rana started in a positive fashion and smashed three boundaries against Ravendra Jadeja in early part of his innings.
Leg-spinner Imran Tahir dismissed Rana in the 11th over of the innings. Robin Uthappa perished for a duck and was dismissed by Tahir by trying to play a slog sweep that got the top edge to see Du Plessis take a clean catch.
Despite losing wickets at the other end, Chris Lynn played well and notched up his half-century in 36 balls. He certainly went after Jadeja and smashed three sixes in an over in order to up the ante in the innings.
Imran Tahir certainly delivered immediately in his second spell and dismissed Lynn, who got the top edge while trying to play a slog sweep. Andre Russell suffered a rare failure as Tahir picked up his fourth wicket to see Chennai pull things back at the end.
Shubham Gill and Dinesh Karthik also chipped in with crucial scores to help Kolkata Knight Riders post 161 for 8 in 20 overs.
For Chennai, Imran Tahir picked up four wickets and conceded 27 runs in his four over spell. Shardul Thakur also was economical in his four-overs and finished with 2 wickets to his name.
