Ben Hilfenhaus’s all-round brilliance helps Melbourne Stars overcome Adelaide Strikers by two wickets in a close game

The 22nd game of the Big Bash League saw Melbourne Stars play against Sydney Thunder at Melbourne Cricket Ground. Hilfenhaus was on the wrong side of things for Stars in game played six days ago as Eoin Morgan smashed a six off his bowling of the last ball to see Thunder gain their first win of the competition. Ben Hilfenhaus was hero for Stars with the bat and ball as his quick-fire 32 runs helped his side win the game by two wickets against Adelaide Strikers.

Adelaide Strikers started well in their innings with 60 runs for loss the one wicket from first seven overs.Ben Dunk did make a brisk 35 runs off 25 balls, but was undone by debutant spinner Liam Bowe who claimed first wicket of his T20 career. The departure of Dunk also saw the drop in the momentum in terms of run scoring as Tim Luderman and Brad Hodge struggled to get the ball away in the gaps. Scott Boland once again showed impressive form with four wickets while Hilfenhaus also picked two wickets to see Strikers post a modest total of 152 runs from 20 overs.

Melbourne Stars did make a good start to the innings as Rob Quiney and Kevin Pietersen got in but were dismissed after making valuable 30s to see the side falter at 3 for 59.Marcus Stoinis and Peter Handscomb fell in quick succession while Captain David Hussey could only score 15 runs to see the side in tricky situation at 107 for 6 after 14 overs.Ben Laughlin and Ish Sodhi did the damage for Strikers as they took five wickets between them. Evan Gulbis and Ben Hilfenhaus put on a match winning partnership of 37 runs to see Melbourne Stars win the game in the last over of the innings by two wickets.

The win against Strikers means that Melbourne Stars have now placed at fourth in the overall league table with three wins out of five games while Strikers campaign have taken a blow as they now sit at bottom half of the table in the competition.
