Pandya, bowlers set up India’s win against Australia

Australia capitulated badly in the chase to see India win the first game of the one day series played at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Hosts India have taken 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya played beautifully to take India out of precarious situation. The hosts were in deep trouble at 87 for 5 after 21.3 overs. Pandya played sensibly and picked up singles to keep the scoreboard ticking. Dhoni also played well to see India’s comeback in the game.

Hardik Pandya unleashed a wide range of strokes against Adam Zampa to give the innings necessary impetus and turn things around for India. He scored 83 runs off 66 balls and smashed five sixes in his innings. He formed a partnership of 118 runs with Dhoni to put India right on the track to post a decent total on the board after Virat Kohli won the toss and opted to bat first.

The rain intervention saw the game reduced to just 21 runs with Australia needing another 164 runs to win the game. Hilton Cartwright was cleaned  up by fast bowler Jaspreet Bumrah. Hardik Pandya also dazzled with the ball in hand by taking big wickets of Steven Smith and Travis Head to see Australia slump to 29 for 3 after 6.4 overs. David Warner played well for his 25 runs before Kuldeep Yadav outfoxed him with a quick wide delivery to see Dhoni take a clean catch behind the stumps.

Glenn Maxwell came to the crease with Australia in deep trouble. The middle order batsman smashed a quick-fire 39 runs off just 19 balls to keep his side in the hunt. He was dismissed by Yuzvendra Chahal while trying to go for big shot. Chahal also picked up Marcus Stoinis and Pat Cummins to see India win the game by 26 runs in a rain-affected game.

Kuldeep Yadav also bowled well to take two wickets in the game as the second game of the one day series will be played on Thursday at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
