Ashwin takes ten as India defeat New Zealand by 197 runs in first test at Kanpur

The 500th Test for India started off well with facilitation ceremony where legends of the game such as Sachin Tendulkar, Mohammad Azharuddin,Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni for their contribution to the game in the country.

The hosts India started off the test in a jittery fashion with New Zealand ending Day 1 in a commanding position but it quickly turned around as spinners Ravendra Jadeja and Ravi Ashwin bamboozle the Kiwis to take a slender lead going into Day 3.New Zealand did perform admirably despite predicted to be brushed aside easily by India on turning surfaces. The visitors have always managed to surprise people by giving spirited performances in the sub-continent. They have done considerable well given that much superior sides like South Africa and Australia have been thrashed by India at home.

New Zealand was placed in a precarious position with overnight score of 56 for 4 at the end of Day 4 with a herculean task to bat out the whole day to save the test match. Luke Ronchi and Mitchell Santner led a dogged resistance that saw them put 102 run partnership off 36 overs to make India bowlers work hard for wickets. Luke Ronchi played aggressively regularly taking singles and get an odd boundary in his innings. He scored 80 runs off 120 balls in his innings and struck nine fours. Santner also was not far off as he scored 71 runs off 179 balls and hit seven four. Ronchi threw it away just when it looked that he was settled at the crease. Once Watling went there was rapid flurry of wickets as Kiwis got bundled out for 236 runs off 87 overs to give India a hard fought win by 197 runs in the first test at Kanpur.

The premier spinner Ravi Ashwin bagged ten wickets in the game and also completed his 200th wicket in test match. Jadeja also finished six wickets in the game to provide great support to Ashwin from the other end. India now leads the series by 1-0 with next test match to be played at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
