Glenn Maxwell almost took the game away from Knight Riders as he made a majestic 68 runs off 42 balls to carry the hopes of his side to seal an improbable victory.But that was never going to happen as Piyush Chawla finally did manage to outfox Maxwell to trapped him leg before to give his side much needed advantage in the game.In the end,Andre Russell bowled the penultimate over with Kings XI Punjab needing 11 runs to win the game.Andre Russell manage to hold his nerves as he took a wicket and also assisted in causing run-outs causing the Kings XI Punjab fell to agonizingly close to a win.
Kings XI Punjab whole innings was a tale of one man Glenn Maxwell who carried the whole game on his shoulders for his side.He took the attack to the opposition bowlers as he played his cuts and flicks against quick bowlers who erred on bowling short of the length to him.He also was harsh on spinners as he lofted shots down the ground to hit fours and sixes to bring up his fifty runs off just 29 balls.He made one mistake that saw his demise as he failed to read a googly from leg spinner Piyush Chawla while attempting to play the reverse sweep.The result after the Maxwell departure saw Kolkata Knight Riders get across the line in a close finish by 7 runs.
Earlier in the game,Kolkata Knight Riders batted first as Murali Vijay won the toss for Kings XI and decided to field first on a sluggish surface.In the beginning of the innings,Kolkata started well as both their openers sharing a stand of 100 runs.Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa continued their good run of form notching up fifties to lay down an ideal setting for others to push the score towards 180 run mark.Gambhir top scored with 70 runs off 49 balls as Kolkata Knight Riders managed to score 164 runs after 20 overs.
The loss is worrying sign for Kings XI Punjab after they are reeling at the bottom of the standings with six losses in eight game played in the ninth edition of Indian Premier League while Knight Riders go top of the table after this win.
