Pacer Amad Butt’s clinical bowling performances followed by half-centuries from Luke Ronchi and Colin Munro was enough to see Peshawar Zalmi register a comprehensive win over Multan Sultans in the 5th match of 2020 Pakistan Super League at Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday.
The day started with Islamabad United Skipper Shadab Khan winning the toss and opting to bowl first. Multan openers Shan Masood and James Vince got the side off to a decent start and added 41 runs in the intial set of five overs. Medium-pacer Faheem Ashraf came into the attack and dismissed Shan Masood to see Multan lose their first wicket. Captain Shan Masood scored 21 run off 20 balls with the help of three boundaries.
Amad Butt produced a match-winning spell for Islamabad United to dismiss Moeen Ali and Rilee Rossouw in quick succession to see Multan Sultans reduced to 70 for 3 after 9.3 overs. James Vince played well and scored 42 runs off 31 balls with the help of six fours and one six.
Wicket-keeper Zeeshan Ashraf fought hard and delivered a splendid innings to help Multan Sultans post a decent total on the board. Ashraf held the innings together and scored 50 runs off 29 balls with the help of four fours and three sixes. Shahid Afridi and Sohail Tanvir scored crucial runs to help Multan Sultans post 164 runs for loss of 8 wickets in their allotted 20 overs.
For Islamabad United, medium-pacer Amad Butt claimed four wickets and conceded 27 runs in his four overs. Faheem Ashraf claimed two wicket, while Mohammad Musa and Akif Javed picked up one wicket apiece.
In reply, Islamabad United openers Luke Ronchi and Colin Munro put on a 92-run partnership to set the tone for the chase. The big positive for United was that both the openers got big runs in this game. Colin Munro played well and scored his first half-century of the competition. Left-hander smashed three fours and four sixes in his innings.
Luke Ronchi continued to be positive at the crease and put on a 71-run partnership with Dawid Malan to steer Islamabad United to a comfortable win. Ronchi was the standout performer with the bat and smashed 74 runs off 45 balls with the help of nine fours and two sixes. He was well supported by Malan, who chipped in with 35 runs off 21 balls with the help of five fours and one six.
For Multan, Mohammad Illyas and Shahid Afridi claimed one wicket, while the rest of attack lacked potency to create breakthroughs against United.
For his superb batting performance, Luke Ronchi was awarded man of the match.
