Aaron Finch and Steve Smith star in Australia’s three wicket win over Srilanka in the first one day game

The first one day game between Srilanka and Australia was played at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Australia need to produce some showing in the shorter format after getting mauled in the test series by hosts Srilanka. Angelo Matthews stated the side will be keen to continue good run of form in the one’s day.

Australia did finally break their duck on the tour with a win after Captain Steve Smith produced a gritty knock to help his side win the game by three wickets. Australia was given a target of 228 runs as Srilanka batted first on the surface. The target seemed to be stiff one due to recent trials of Aussie batsmen against spin. Leading bowler for Australia Mitchell Starc once again was the man with the ball upfront to take wickets upfront to put pressure on Srilanka from the start of the innings.Srilanka did regroup as Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal put on 79 run partnership. Dinesh Chandimal remained unbeaten and scored 80 runs to help his side post 227 runs on the board. Kusal Mendis also played well for his 67 runs. James Faulkner was best of the bowlers with four wickets while Starc produced yet another first-rate performance with three wickets.

Australia in reply was on the attack as Finch scored a brisk half century to provide impetus to the chase. David Warner fell early but Steve Smith came in and played a sensible innings to take his side to win the game. Srilankan spinners Lakshan Sandakan and Amilia Aponso bowled tidy lengths to keep Australia batsmen in check for the whole innings as the spinners took 7 wickets between them. Smith scored 58 runs off 92 balls well supported by George Bailey who scored 39 runs to help the side win the first game and lead the series 1-0
