Chasing 334 runs to win, Sri Lanka got off to a flying start as Kusal Perera decided to take the attack to the bowlers from the start. Perera smashed a quick-fire 52 off 36 balls to see Sri Lanka in a great position to win the game.
Mitchell Starc bowled a full-length delivery to dismiss Perera in the 16th over of the innings. Lahiru Thiramanne came to the crease and added 38 runs with Karunaratne to keep the scoreboard ticking for Sri Lanka.

Dimuth Karunaratne fell three runs short of a richly-deserved century. Richardson produced an innocuous delivery to get rid of Karunaratne in the 33rd over of the innings.
