The finale of the inaugural Pakistan Super League held on Arabian Landscape started with mesmerizing exhibition of performances and display of fireworks.
The match was a battleground set between the dark horses Islamabad United pitted against the hot favorites Quetta Gladiators played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
The Captain of Islamabad United Misbah-ul-Haq won a crucial toss and opted to field first as dew was expected to play a big part in later part of the innings.
Islamabad United spearhead Mohamamd Irfan provided an early breakthrough by dismissing Gladiator opener Bismillah Khan for a duck.Kevin Pietersen could not get going and was out to bowling off Andre Russell despite his heroics in the previous games.
Ahmed Shehzad, who has actually been a mixed bag in terms of performances came to the party at the right moment and scored a majestic 64 runs off 39 runs that included nine fours and one six.He formed a partnership of 87 runs with masterclass batsman Kumar Sangakarra as they provided impetus to the innings after a slow start.
Kumar Sangakarra continued his golden run of form as he struck 55 runs off 32 balls to help his team put up a daunting target for Islamabad United.
The momentum changed towards United when Andre Russell took the prized wickets of Shehzad and Sangakarra to stem the flow of runs after Gladiators were ideally placed at 120 runs after 14 overs.
Grant Elliott and Anwar Ali put on a good partnership to steer Gladiators to a total of 175 runs after 20 overs.
Islamabad United got off to rollicking start at the hands of Dwayne Smith who scored a match-winning innings of 73 runs off 51 balls that included seven fours and four sixes.
After quite timid and sluggish batting display by Smith in the previous outings,he seem to have struck the right balance in this innings. He provided exhibition of clinical and brute display of batting that completely deflated the chances of Quetta Gladiators in staging a comeback in the game.
Dwayne Smith formed a match winning partnership with Brad Haddin who was in terrific touch as he remained unbeaten on 61 runs till the end.He played a wonderful part in the chase and depicted ideal combination of attack and defense to steer his side to victory and win the inaugural coveted trophy in UAE.
Quetta bowlers were erratic on the night as only left arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz once again bowled economically in a high scoring affair.
It was fitting end to a tournament that saw seasoned campaigner like Misbah-ul-Haq taking the big prize home as pundits had never dubbed them as favorites before the start of Pakistan Super League.
