Usman Shinwari’s five-for helps Pakistan whitewash Sri Lanka

Hosts cruise to nine-wicket win in fifth ODI in Sharjah on Monday

Usman Shinwari produced an outstanding spell of fast-bowling as Pakistan thrashed Sri Lanka by nine wickets in the fifth ODI to complete whitewash in Sharjah on Monday.

Islanders, coming into the final match of the series, was facing their third clean sweep in 50-over format in 2017 and were hoping to turn it around in the last game of the series, but it wasn’t to be.Just like on the last two occasions, the visiting side’s captain Upul Tharanga won the toss and decided to bat first.

His decision, however, proved a disastrous one as young Usman Shinwari, who was only playing his second match in the 50-over format, claimed his maiden five-wicket haul to decimate the oppositions batting.

While doing so, the Khyber Agency-born pacer became the third quickest in terms of number of balls (21) to pick five wickets. It was a dent which was so big the struggling Sri Lanka side, who could not manage to recover and were eventually bowled out for 103 in the 21st over.

All-rounder Thisara Perera finished the innings with the top score of 25 off 29 balls with the help of three boundaries, whereas Lahiru Thiramanne scored 19 off 31 and Seekkuge Prasanna scored 16 off 34 balls.

For Pakistan, Usman Shinwari finished with figures of five for 34 in seven overs, whereas Hasan Ali and Shadab Khan claimed two wickets each.

Chasing 104 to win the title, it was never going to be a tough task for the hosts, as they cruised to the victory in the 21st over with nine wickets in hand.

Fakhar Zaman finished the innings with the top score of 48 off 47 with the help of seven fours, whereas young Imam-ul-Haq finished unbeaten on 45 off 64 with the help of four boundaries and one six. For his brilliant opening spell, Shinwari was awarded man of the match, whereas for his consistent performances, Hasan named player of the series.
