Baggy Greens take 1-0 lead in four-match series courtesy 118-run win
Mitchell Starc produced a brilliant performance to help Australia go 1-0 up in the four-match series courtesy 118-run victory in the first Test against South Africa in Durban.After opting to bat first, Australia post a competitive total of 351 on the board in the first innings. The star performer of the innings for the visitors was all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, who scored 96 off 173 with the help 13 fours and one six.For South Africa, left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj was the pick of the bowler as he claimed figures of five of 123.
In reply, South Africa were bamboozled by Starc’s magic and were bowled out for just 162. Veteran middle-order batsman AB de Villiers was the stand out batsman for the home side as he remained not out on 71 off 127. Mitchell Starc ripped through the home sides batting order with fiery spell of fast-bowling and claimed figures of five for 34. He was well supported by off-spinner Nathan Lyoun, who claimed three wickets.
In the second innings, Australia were bowled out for just 227, as opener Cameron Bancroft finished with the top score of 53 off 83 balls with the help of 10 fours.For South Africa, Maharaj was once again the best bowler on show, as he claimed four, whereas pacer Morne Morkel claimed three wickets.
Chasing 417 was always going to be a tough task for the home side, especially after first innings debacle, and so it proved to be as their valiant effort came to an end at 298 on the final day’s morning.
The star of the show for home side was opener Aiden Markram, as he struck his third century in the five-day format and scored an outstanding 143 runs off 218 with the help of 19 fours. He was well supported by wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock, who scored 83 off 149.
For Australia, Starc was once again the standout bowler as he claimed figures of four for 75. He was well supported by fellow new-ball partner Josh Hazlewood, who claimed three wickets.For his nine wicket in the game, Mitchell Starc was named player of the match.
