Kolkata Knight Riders go top of the points table as they pulled off an improbable win out of nowhere to defeat Delhi Daredevils by four wickets in 18th game played at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi.
Manish Pandey and Yusuf Pathan were standout players for Knight Riders after the visitors to 21 for 3 after 3 overs with Captain Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa back in the hut. Manish Pandey added 110 runs with Yusuf Pathan to bail the side out of deep trouble and put them right back in contention to win the game. Chris Morris came back in the 14th over to dismiss Pathan who departed after scoring 59 runs off 39 balls. He struck six boundaries and two sixes in his innings.
Pandey carried his bat till the end to score unbeaten 69 runs off 49 balls. He stuck four fours and three sixes in his innings to help Knight Riders chase down a target of 168 runs set by Delhi while batting first. Zaheer Khan bowled well in this game, taking two wickets and conceded 28 runs from his four-over spell while Cummins was a touch expensive in this game.
Earlier, Zaheer opted to bat first after winning the toss for Delhi Daredevils. Delhi saw two major changes as Shahbaz Nadeem was replaced by Mohammad Shami while Angelo Matthews came in for Corey Anderson a decision surprised many fans and critics. For Kolkata, Trent Boult was sidelined as Nathan Coulter-Nile was slotted into the lineup.
Sanju Samson and Sam Billings provided Delhi with a perfect start as duo scored 53 runs after 6 overs. But Kolkata’s fast men came back strong as Umesh Yadav dismissed Samson to see Delhi lose their first wicket while Billings also perished due to great bowling by Nathan-Coulter Nile. Karun Nair and Shreyas Iyer got starts and failed to kick on to get a big score as Kolkata kept taking wickets to restrict Delhi to 167 runs after 20 overs. Nathan Coulter Nile bagged three wickets in his four-over spell while Sunil Narine also bowled tidy spell for Kolkata.
Kolkata are now comfortably at the top with four wins from five games played in Indian Premier League while Delhi suffered their second last of the competition.
